Why Ray Reggie Makes Time for the JTRA Food Bank!

My name is Lisa and I am a guest columnist here at Ray Reggie’s Feed the Needy of New Orleans for this post.  Mr. Reggie is a friend of mine and one of the things that strikes me every time that I speak with him is that one of the things that is always at the forefront of his mind is the JTRA food bank in New Orleans that he is the Chairman of the Board for.  In fact, I tease him about how devoted he is to it.  He speaks of it every time, always trying to find ways to do more for the food bank and make sure that they have enough food for all the needy people in New Orleans.  New Orleans is his home and it and it’s people are his heart.  He sent me an email recently pointing out an article to me, which you can read here, that explains that a horrifying 3.5 million American children under the age of five are going hungry.  On top of that, Lousiana has the highest rate of hungry children.  Being a mother of four, I hung my head in shame for ever teasing him about the work he does with JTRA and I will thank God every day for people like Ray Reggie that keep the food banks going so that if I ever find myself in an unexpected situation and I need that food bank to feed my children, I know that they will be there for me.

So, I would just like to say, to Ray Reggie and all the others that devote their time and labor and money to America’s food banks and shelters, I thank you!

Grow Your Own Food

With the economy the way that it is, many people have growing concerns about keeping the food on the table. More and more families are visiting food banks and food pantries just to get by day to day. This is an extremely uncomfortable and stressful way to live and in New Orleans the fear is far worse for those that have been through Katrina. One way that you can take some of the stress away is to start growing some of your own food, even if you only have limited space. Gardening is very theraputic also and can help relieve stress, the food is healthier for you and if you have space to grow enough, you can freeze or can some of it to put away for emergencies. New Orleans Is Bringing The Chickens Back

Chickens have always been a fairly common thing to see around the New Orleans area but many were lost with everything else in Hurricane Katrina.  Thankfully, chickens are making a comeback.  Many people in the New Orleans area are beginning to replenish the chickens so provide a healthy choice for meat and eggs that they know where they came from and what they were fed.  In addition to being a great way to feed your family healthier, you can feed them your food wastes to get rid of it and they provide excellent fertilizer for your composting and gardening needs.  It is a win-win situation.  Read more about these urban chickens here…

Get Ready For Fat Tuesday

Well, Mardi Gras is finally here and they are predicting that this year will be the biggest since Katrina.  That is wonderful news for the New Orleans spirit not too mention the economy.   Most people know a little bit about Mardi Gras, like that it is one big party with lots of food and lots of beads, but when it comes to what to do if you are in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, check out the big five.  The French Quarter, the St. Charles Streetcar, The Lousiana Music Factory, The Audobon Nature Institute and a walking tour of the New District top the list.  Read more about these fun places here.

Food Brings New Orleans Together

One of the main things that originally brought people to the fine city of New Orleans was the food.  Since the devastation of Katrina, many local businesses including restaurants were destroyed.  But the rebuilding and reopening of these fine establishments are part of the reason that New Orleans will never die.  Katrina did not stop people from coming to New Orleans for the unique and delicious food that you can find there.  Food made New Orleans what it once was and food can help bring it back to the amazing city that it used to be.  People joining together with common goals of rebuilding their city and common interests (like awesome food) can be the link that ties us together and helps us rebuild our city and its people.  Read more about this here.
